Of all the Android handset manufacturers, Lenovo has certainly made the biggest splash of 2014. Aside from its acquisition of Motorola last month, Lenovo has also made headlines by recently launching two promising new smartphones - the Vibe X and Vibe Z.

The Vibe Z is the upcoming flagship model, and will be released in the UAE at the end of February. Coming in at the top of the range, it's the first Lenovo phone to feature LTE and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. It's also Lenovo's biggest handset, sporting a 5.5-inch HD display, which puts it right up against Samsung's Galaxy Note 3. The only difference is that, when it launches, the Vibe Z will retail for AED 1,999 - AED 450 cheaper than the base Note 3.

But when it comes to Android-powered smartphones, price is hardly an indicator of quality. So does Lenovo's newest offering, while costing less, offer as much value as the market-leading players in the large-screen segment?

On the face of it, the answer is yes. Despite weighing in at a reasonably light 147 grams, the Vibe Z maintains a quality feel to it thanks to the laser-etched rear cover and the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display on the front. In the same way that Lenovo's ThinkPad range of laptops are perceived as tough, the Vibe Z feels solid and durable.

Switch it on, and the device's time to boot is impressively quick. Indeed, there are little complaints to make about the Vibe Z's performance at all - opening and closing apps is quick and easy, and there are no noticeable lags even when dealing with power-hungry apps such as games. Certainly, Lenovo's decision to outfit the Vibe Z with Qualcomm's 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor has paid dividends.
