The Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) has completed the first phase of a project that will see free Wi-Fi being offered across the entire Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) technology park.

Free Wi-Fi access is now available at the DSOA headquarters, the Cedre shopping centre, the Semmer Villas community centre, DSOA said in a statement this week. Wi-Fi has also been extended to the parking lots attached to these areas, the statement added.

The second phase of the project is due for completion in the second quarter of 2014, DSOA said. Upon full completion, DSOA hopes that it will become the first free zone in Dubai to offer always-on, free Wi-Fi throughout its entire campus.

"Making our premises entirely Wi-Fi free-enabled marks an essential step forward in transforming Dubai Silicon Oasis into a smart city in accordance with the directives of our leadership. We are confident that the provision of free Wi-Fi will add significant value to the visitors and residents of DSO," said Eng. Muammar Al Katheeri, executive vice president of engineering management at DSOA.

EmiratesWifi is responsible for installing, commissioning and maintaining wireless internet throughout the 7.2-square-kilometre free zone. The company will also provide support with software solutions for control over the bandwidth of the service.
