Social giant looks at retail, ecommerce revenues to drive regional growth

Facebook has announced the appointment of Narain Jashanmal to lead retail and ecommerce sales in the Middle East and North Africa.

Jashanmal joins the social media giant as client partner, Retail and eCommerce for the MENA region.

He previously held the post of general manager at the Jashanmal Group, responsible for over 25 retail outlets under the brand.

More than 28m people in the Middle East and North Africa are using Facebook on a daily basis, according to official figures released late last year.

Facebook also said 56m people were active on Facebook every month across the MENA region, with 50% of those returning on a daily basis.

Of those, 33m people in MENA used a phone or tablet to access to the service every month, while the number of daily active users on mobiles had reached 15m.

Jonathan Labin, head of Facebook for Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, said: "As the MENA region continues to develop its retail and eCommerce capabilities, I am confident Narain will add value to Facebook's existing network of partnerships across the region through utilising over 10 years of market know-how and solid track record of achieving set objectives.

"Narain's strong network and sustained business growth knowledge will not only help in supporting Facebook's strategy to deliver significant brand value to advertisers, but will also add the necessary tools to help drive our growth and diversification to higher levels."

Commenting on his appointment, Jashanmal added: "Facebook in the MENA region has seen commendable growth in the past years, which has been possible due to the strong value proposition it offers its customers in all sectors and across all the main markets.

"I look forward to building on the successes of the whole team who worked hard to lead the brand through its evolution to become the world's leading social media platform."
