Abu Dhabi Police has signed an agreement with Samsung Electronics, to roll out the Samsung KNOX mobile security platform.

The Information Technology & Telecommunications Department at Abu Dhabi Police has signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung to deploy the solution, which protects Android-based smart devices. Abu Dhabi police have tested the solution, which is intended to protect against mobile viruses and other malware, and now plan to roll out the solution to all members of staff of the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ.

Col. Anwar Al Mulla, Head of Information Technology and Telecommunications Department at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ said: "The Information Technology & Telecommunications Department team always seeks to adopt the latest global technology to support the strategic goals of the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ. The management of the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police is the first homeland security organization in the world to adopt this enhanced security platform from Samsung. Several global security organisations are currently in the trial phase, however, Abu Dhabi Police GHQ is the first to deploy and implement it.

"One of the most important current initiatives for the Information Technology & Telecommunications Department is to support the police forces' use of smart applications on mobile devices. The aim of this initiative is to support the optimum use of resources and technology in order to provide wide services for the society and to gain the trust of the society," he added.

Commenting on KNOX, Lt. Col. Tarek Al Hassani, Head of Technical Support Section in Information Technology & Telecommunications Department added: "KNOX allows the use of smart applications within the organisation and among all its employees, ensuring a high level of security and preventing information leakage, thus protecting confidential information and data used."

Capt. Mohammad Al Obeidli, Head of Research and Technical Resources said: "Information Technology & Telecommunications Department adopted the trial of KNOX as soon as it was announced by the police. Additionally, Information Technology & Telecommunications Department carried out extensive testing to ensure its efficiency and functioning at the required level. It will now be deployed to select users before being extended to the rest of the police force. A special committee has been created to evaluate the system and to study all of its functions and effectiveness."

Lt. Col. Tarek Al Hassani and Capt. Mohammad Al Obeidli have met with Samsung's KNOX team at Samsung's offices to discuss the implementation of the system. Samsung agreed to provide  full technical support to Abu Dhabi Police in relation to the implementation and development of the system in a way that suits Abu Dhabi Police use.

Madhav Narayan Senior Regional Director at Samsung Electronics Gulf said: "Samsung is committed to supporting the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ in developing the Samsung KNOX system to suit their specific requirements. Since the MOU was signed, we have worked closely with Information Technology & Telecommunications Department to prepare for testing out the platform for evaluation."

Narayan added: "KNOX has passed all the stringent security tests set by the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ and is now ready for gradual deployment across the police force. The adoption of KNOX by the Information Technology & Telecommunications Department at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ is testament to the readiness of the system to be deployed in the security environments. We look forward to closely collaborating with the Information Technology & Telecommunications Department at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ on this initiative and others across Samsung's technology portfolio."
