Unsupported platforms create 'perfect security storm' in 2014 End of support for Windows XP and Java 6 will create a perfect storm of security risks, says Genes.

The end of support for Windows XP, and premier support for Java 6, will create a "perfect storm" in security terms, according to Raimund Genes, chief technology officer, Trend Micro.

The expiration of support for the popular systems - Windows XP is out of support in April, and Oracle has already ceased releasing public updates to Java 6 - will leave many users, particularly enterprise users with custom applications, vulnerable to attack.

"This will be the perfect storm in 2014. XP is still around, especially here in the Middle East, you have tons of XP systems, and I don't blame the users, they have invested in software, but it only works on XP, so you can't migrate the system without huge costs. So they are just not migrating, XP runs out of service, but this doesn't mean that the bad guys will not find new vulnerabilities," Genes said.

"We had a long debate within Trend Micro, should we still continue to support XP? Because for us, is it beneficial to support a 12 year old operating system? We need developers for this, but we decided we have so many customers still on XP, so we will continue to support XP because we see a perfect storm coming - Java 6 and Windows XP, both old systems, both not supported any more, so the attackers next year will have an easy job."

More than half of Java users are still using the outdated version, while Windows XP is also still in wide usage in businesses, particularly for critical systems which have been custom built years ago to support the business, and which cannot be easily migrated without extensive reprogramming, Genes commented.
