Dubai-based telecoms provider du last week held a Telecom Knowledge Session on mobile number portability (MNP) in the UAE.

The event was arranged for the UAE media and the briefing was conducted by Ahmed Mokhles, executive vice president, Consumer and Digital Business, du and Carin Johansson, commercial programme manager, MNP, du, who according to du, is one of the world's leading MNP experts.

The sessions, two each in Arabic and English, were also attended by "key bloggers and social media activists", du said. The company used the sessions to raise awareness about the mechanics of MNP, discussing what it is, what it means for customers, and why it matters for the UAE. MNP worldwide best practices, success criteria and how it is being implemented in the UAE were also covered.

Speaking at the session, Mokhles said: "MNP is all about offering freedom of choice to telecom users. Under the guidance of the TRA, MNP presents a landmark initiative for the UAE's telecom sector. The UAE is ready to launch this significant step, and we are confident that it will have myriad positive implications for not only the nation's telecom sector, but for the country as a whole and the economy, too."

Johansson added, "In launching MNP, the UAE will join a rich history of 75 countries and 15 territories in the world that offer this superior level of choice to telecom customers.  Since it was introduced in Hong Kong in 1995, number portability has opened new doors for telecom operators across the world, and it will now provide UAE customers with a new level of choice."
