Muscat Municipality is to upgrade its design capabilities, with the deployment of Autodesk AutoCAD 2014.

The Municipality is taking 65 licences for the design software, which will be used by designers and engineers in the department, to give them more modern 2D and 3D design capabilities to keep up with a growing volume of projects in the Sultanate and Muscat in particular. Oman is expected to award $65 billion in projects in 2017, twice the combined value of projects awarded in the country over the last five years.

Autodesk distributor Omnix International will supply the licences and software, along with overview and training.

The AutoCAD 2014 software package for Muscat Municipality will also include Autodesk 360, Autodesk's cloud based services platform that gives users free storage, viewing capabilities, collaboration & sharing, recap photo trial, Pixlr services and rendering in the cloud. The Municipality also intends to upgrade to Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology using the latest Autodesk 3D design software, which will include Revit Suite and Civila 3D.

"Upgrading our engineering team's technical capabilities is an essential move that we needed to take in order to be able to better review project designs and produce more efficient designs for major building and infrastructure projects in Oman," said Rashid Al Reyami, director of Technical Support, Muscat Municipality. "We are confident that our decision to use AutoCAD 2014 will be able to help us address key challenges like saving costs and time, design accuracy and coming up with a unified source of data that will help in giving unique codes to plots, collaboration of GIS data and extracting attributes for building data."

"We commend Muscat Municipality for their initiative to upgrade and modernize their design technologies. Their efforts demonstrate their eagerness to address the challenges presented to them by the influx of construction projects in Muscat. Using AutoCAD 2014 is a major shift for their design process. Rest assured, we remain fully committed in helping Muscat municipality by providing the necessary training and guidance to make them proficient in using the new software," concluded Dr. Jayant Deshpande, Director-CAE Division, Omnix International.
