Samsung Electronics today claimed its Galaxy Gear smart watch is now the world's most popular wrist-mounted tech, having sold 800,000 units since its release two months ago.

If true, the Gear has confounded market analysts' expectations of a failure due to lack of standout functionality.

The Gear acts as a companion device to Samsung's premium Galaxy range of tablets and smartphones, allowing mirrored hands-free access to some of the functions offered by the parent device, such as SMS and voice calls.

Despite reports from some US retailers of 30% return rates, Samsung insisted on the fledgling device's popularity.

"It's the most sold wearable watch available in the market place...and we plan to expand its availability by expanding mobile devices that work with the Gear," the company said in a statement.
