Network management software (NMS) should be implemented in companies regardless of size. Investment in an NMS should be linked to the productivity and cost saving benefits that it can ultimately deliver to the business, according to ManageEngine.

“The necessity of an NMS cannot be decided on the data traffic or network size,” states Dev Anand, director of product management at ManageEngine. “Rather, its importance can be measured by associating business revenue with network performance. If a company loses millions of dollars when the network goes down, NMS is necessary.”

Gartner’s Vivek Bhalla said that regardless of the size of the organisation, network infrastructure management should be a priority from the start, particularly as networks are becoming more complex all the time.

“For those organisations lacking the maturity to obtain maximum value from a complex enterprise-grade management offering, more simplistic network monitoring and management solutions are available,” he said.

“These have recently evolved past scalability issues and are better able to meet the needs of larger organisations. These open-source, commercial open-source and low-cost [including Software-as-a-Service delivery model] network availability and performance-monitoring options provide good alternatives to legacy technology investments with a lower level of complexity. We expect these kinds of solutions to provide 80% of the functionality of traditional enterprise solutions and at a significantly lower cost.”
