How did the company start and what is its history to date?

AccessData was founded in 1987 by Eric Thompson to solve a new business problem at that time. Novel’s office suite WordPerfect had just introduced password protection and with it came users who routinely forgot their password. AccessData’s first product, WP Pass, was a rudimentary decryption application that could crack file passwords that had been forgotten. Since that time AccessData has grown their proprietary ability to look at the 1’s and 0’s of digital data, in all forms (static, dynamic and network) to solve a variety of business problems. In late 2005, Tim Leehealey, AccessData’s CEO and Brian Karney, AccessData’s COO and president invested in AccessData and have built the company into a world leader in digital forensics, with incident response, analytics, forensic and e-discovery products and services.

In 2007 AccessData acquired SilentRunner, a network threat and visualisation technology originally developed for the US government by Ratheon. That technology has been expanded and integrated to all of the company’s cyber security portfolio offerings.

In 2008 the company secured the services and technology behind Mobile Forensics Inc, a small but aggressive startup focusing on mobile forensics including all forms of smart phones and devices. The product known as Mobile Phone Examiner PlusTM (MPE+TM) is quickly becoming the mobile forensic solution of choice for global public and private organisations. The organisation acquired Summation from Wolter’s Kluwer in 2010 and have revitalised that product into a premier litigation support and legal review platform.

It is also part of the company’s premier in-house e-discovery solution.
