The UAE's transformation into a "mobile government" should be completed within two years, a top official has said.

The Committee to Activate the Mobile Government Initiative said it has approved a roadmap for the transformation of federal authorities to launch a bundle of services available via mobile phones.

As part of the process, the Information and Communication Technology Fund has announced the allocation of AED200m to finance the drive, news agency WAM reported.

The scheme, known as ‘m-Government', will see all government entities in the Gulf state provide their services via mobile phones, text messaging and other portable devices.

The plan follows on from the launch of the UAE's e-Government initiative in 2000, which has seen many government services made available via the internet in the time since.

The UAE has one of the highest rates of mobile phone penetration in the world, with approximately 14m active subscribers across a permanent population of about 8m.

Mohammed Abdullah Al Gargawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, and chairman of the committee, said in comments published by WAM: "The coming period will witness several federal authorities launching services through mobile phones, eventually achieving a comprehensive transformation in just two years in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

"The transition will make the UAE one of the first countries in the world to make use of smart devices to provide m-Government services, smart education and integrated digital infrastructure that supports the overall development of the UAE to achieve Vision 2021."
