Bahrain TRA awards LTE spectrum
By  Roger Field Published  September 25, 2013

Bahrain’s telecoms regulator has awarded LTE spectrum licences to the country’s three mobile operators, Batelco, Zain and Viva.

The spectrum awarded to the operators is in 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands, the TRA confirmed.

The development brings to a close a legal dispute that thwarted the TRA’s last attempt to bring LTE services to Bahrain. In April, in the tender process, which was open only to Batelco, Zain and Viva, was delayed by legal action by Bahraini WiMAX operator, Menatelecom, which argued that it should also have been allowed to bid for the LTE spectrum bands.

Menatelecom now intends to implement fixed wireless LTE services using its existing licensed radio frequencies. The TRA has provided Menatelecom with the necessary code for network management, authentication and other personalised services. This should enable Menatelecom to increase its spectrum utilisation efficiency to deliver higher capacity products to its customers, the TRA said.
