The device is billed as a rugged sports version of the South Korean firm's flagship S4. Its design focuses on robustness and durability and according to Samsung the device attained an IP67 (International Protection standards) rating in resistance to dust and water, where the highest level is IP68.

"From rolling sand dunes to rocky wadis, this life companion is engineered to keep you connected whilst exploring the world around you," the company said in an emailed statement.

A sealed design aims to keep dust particles at bay and protect against water damage for "up to 30 minutes of submergence at a depth of one metre".

"The Gulf region is a playground for adventurers and those looking to explore the great outdoors and so we are very excited to launch the Galaxy S4 Active; the newest addition to the Galaxy series," said Hayssam Yassine, head of Telecommunications Group at Samsung Gulf Electronics.
