Top 5 musts for an energy efficient data centre

1. Start with the right infrastructure architecture

‘Any-to-all’ structured cabling offers the greatest flexibility and lowest lifetime cost.

2. Specify thermally efficient cabinets

Pay attention to features that provide the greatest benefits in the longer term, select cabinets with proper cable management and efficient supplemental cooling options, such as liquid cooling doors.

3. Measure and manage

Monitor efficiency and make dynamic adjustments based on automation, load and demand.  The more automated the system is, the better the energy savings will be.  Select intelligent power distribution units that will give you complete visibility of power usage and control.

4. Be cool, not cold

Determine whether you really need all your CRAC units on and at the temperature they are set. CRAC units operate more efficiently and don’t wear out as fast when they are supplied warmer air.

5. Fully utilise your equipment and avoid redundancy that doesn’t add value

Intelligent infrastructure management can provide a record of physical layer connections, allowing channels to be managed to allow full switch port utilisation. This keeps the unused ports down to the minimum.
