With the general release of Google Glass still some months away, a Canadian rival has already started taking pre-orders for a wireless eyewear product, CNET reported yesterday.

Vancouver-based Recon Instruments debuted its Recon Jet - which incorporates elements of the Android OS - at Google I/O last month and is now taking advance orders for $500 that will ship in December. The full release price for the wearable heads-up display will be $600.

The Jet is aimed primarily at sports enthusiasts and its Bluetooth- and ANT+-based tech will allow athletes to collect a range of bioactivity data including heart rate, speed, distance traveled and power output, and show it on the display imbedded in the bottom of the right lens.

Wireless connectivity to a smartphone will allow a number of display options on the lens, including caller ID and SMS content.

Recon has plans to launch a software development kit prior to December to foster app development for the device.

"To say the response exceeded our expectations would be a massive understatement," said Recon CEO Dan Eisenhardt.
