DDoS protection specialist Prolexic has released a free online tool to help companies to plan to counter Distributed Denial of Service attacks.

The PLXplanner is a risk assessment and planning tool to help IT and security professionals build a better defence against DDoS, with a role-based assessment to create strategic recommendations for business, technology and operational methods of combating DDoS.

"Organisations need to realise that DDoS attacks are not just a technology problem," said Stuart Scholly, president at Prolexic. "There are several dimensions to building a strong defence against these attacks. PLXplanner helps organisations focus on areas that are typically overlooked when evaluating their DDoS vulnerabilities."

The PLXplanner was originally released last year as the DDoS Downtime Calculator, but it has now been reworked to offer actual strategic guidance and best practice recommendations, the company said.

"PLXplanner 2.0 is a much deeper, more valuable tool. Our detailed recommendations reflect the user's unique IT and networking environment, customised to their role and responsibilities. This makes it more relevant and valuable for users at every level of the organisation," added Scholly.
