Dumping the market with loads of IT kit considering the grey share of the market is a hurdle that the industry has to address.

Ismail Aziz, Distribution Manager, Commercial Business Gulf, Dell

What’s your career history to date? How did you end up working in Dubai?

I have over 15 years of experience in IT distribution in the region. I started my career in 1998 with Mantrac Group in Egypt, handling products for IBM and 3Com. In 2004, I started handling Dell as a product manager and then products manager, managing a group of products and team of product managers that handled brands like IBM, Microsoft, Lenovo and Dell. In 2008, I moved to Dubai to set-up the regional IT business for Uantrac Gulf. I was the regional territories manager until 2012, before joining Dell in my current role.

If you could improve one thing about the channel business what would it be?

I would improve the product portfolio in the distribution space and enable distributors to add more value to the solutions they offer. Distributors across the region need to work with resellers to help them grow and add value to the products they sell, which in turn drives business in the channel.

What product or technology should the channel watch out this year?

Distributors and channel partners need to bring and drive the technical know-how on enterprise products and solutions that can be implemented in various heterogeneous IT environments.

What is your proudest career achievement to date?

My proudest career achievement happened when I successfully built the regional IT business for Unatrac, part of Mantrac Group. I was able to contribute to building brands like Dell, Microsoft, Acer, IBM, Lenovo and HP at Unatrac.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

My father once shared with me to seek for every new opportunity of learning on a daily basis. I value this today because in our industry every day, one learns or experiences something new.

What is the biggest mistake you have ever made since working in the IT Market?

I wouldn’t go as far as classifying them as mistakes, but rather as opportunities from which we can learn and sharpen our skills.

Which IT company other than your own do you most admire and why?

I don’t have any specific company in mind but it has to be a company that can offer the market complete solutions and IT needs.

What is the biggest challenge facing the Middle East IT channel?

I believe that dumping the market with loads of IT equipment’s considering the grey share of the market is a hurdle that the industry has to address. We can’t show what the market share is of a region if channel partners and distributors are carrying stock or inventory that has stagnated for months on end.

What’s your favorite thing about the company you work for at the moment?

It is its product range. Dell has continued to custom design servers to meet the specific requirements of virtualised IT environments. The company has played a crucial role in unlocking and bringing to market leading cloud infrastructure solutions and knowledge.

What sort of interests do you have outside of work?

I am an avid music fan. I like taking walks and spending time with my kids as much as I can.
