Three firms may bid for Jordan mobile license
Kingdom’s existing operators include Zain, Orange Jordan and Batelco’s Umniah
Jordan is issuing a fourth licence for fourth mobile and fixed wireless broadband.
Three companies have expressed an interest in acquiring the fourth mobile license and fixed wireless broadband services in Jordan, the Jordan Times reported, citing the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).
The TRC will be announcing the criteria needed to obtain the licences by the end of March, the newspaper reported.
The kingdom's existing mobile operators include Zain Jordan, a subsidiary of Kuwait's Zain, Orange Jordan, in which France Telecom has a stake, and Batelco unit Umniah. Xpress, a fourth provider which started operating in the kingdom in 2004, ceased services in 2011.
Mobile penetration in Jordan reached 138 percent by the end of September last year with 8.7m mobile subscribers, while internet penetration reached 63% in 2012, according to official figures.
