Cloud to make CIO roles more strategic: report Dweik: Today, we face a scenario where each business unit is responsible for IT procurement.
By  Stephen McBride Published  January 23, 2013

The role of CIO within enterprises is becoming increasingly strategic, suggested a Vanson Bourne report commissioned by network solutions provider Brocade.

The research revealed today was conducted with inputs from 100 CIOs from across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and points to the fact that policy enforcement, technology evangelism and mediation between business units and their services providers will become the key responsibilities for the CIO by 2020. This represents a fundamental change from today's role of IT administration. And cloud computing is the main driving force behind this evolution.

More than a third of the respondents surveyed confirmed that cloud services had been deployed by business units in their organizations without the involvement of IT, and two thirds see business units procuring cloud resources by themselves much more by 2020.

While just 20% of those surveyed felt the role of the CIO will become obsolete in over 10 years, over a third stated that they see themselves continuing along a path towards becoming more involved in strategic discussions. The cost benefits of outsourcing components of IT to cloud services could mean steady adoption of the same. The associated operational responsibilities like service level agreement (SLA) management, risk assessment and policy enforcement will lie with the CIO resulting in the merger of the CIO and chief operations officer (COO) roles.

"Today, we are faced with a scenario wherein each business unit is responsible for IT procurement, which originally was the responsibility of the IT department," said Sufian Dweik, regional manager MEMA at Brocade.
