SamTech takes Smart Bus to Intersec RFID monitoring allows the control hub to know the status of each child and to ensure the safety of the journey.

Many stands at Intersec 2013, the DWTC-hosted security expo, display items one would not normally associate with security. Weaved among the CCTV cameras and e-gate offerings are curios such as gloves, boots and personal cooling systems in the shape of seats and body vests.

But when ITP.net came upon Dubai-based SamTech's stand, showcasing a Smart School Bus solution, we just had to know more.

Is this something to do with GPS? we asked.

"It is much more than just GPS," explained Wedad Abdulhadi, projects manager, SamTech Middle East.

She explained that while each bus does have a GPS tracking unit installed, that is only the beginning of the story. Every driver has a driver ID card to ensure they are the valid driver of the bus and they must perform PDA checks of key safety features before each journey, all of which is monitored from an operational control centre.

"Each child is given an RFID [radio frequency identification] so their progress can be monitored," said Abdulhadi.

The monitoring allows the control hub to know the status of each child and to ensure the safety of the journey.

Once a child has registered with a particular bus's journey, the child's parents will receive an SMS alert and will be able to track the progress of the bus online. They will also receive notifications at key points in the journey such as when the child is close to their personal drop-off point. In addition, if there is a delay in the journey - a common occurrence in Dubai's traffic - the parents will informed by SMS.

Technology is a boon and bane is mirrored by the convenience and safety it provides. However this application is boon and not bane.
