King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, yesterday signed an agreement with Hewlett-Packard to provide a training programme designed to enhance the skillsets and job prospects of the kingdom's information technology graduates, Arab News reported.

The agreement - signed by KAU's dean of Computer and Information Technology Dr Abdu Fatah Sulaiman Mashat and Hewlett Packard Institute director general Ziad Murtaja at the university campus - covers the training of 1,900 students over a two-year period at Saudi's largest university, readying Saudi nationals for the demanding IT labour market.

The HP Institute runs courses through tertiary education centres across Europe and the US offering the company's Accredited Technical Associate (ATA) qualification. The programme's aim is to help 20,000 people worldwide, over the next four years, to mix technical and business skills in order to be more effective corporate assets.

Course modules are intended to teach a business-leaning perspective in five main areas of technology: connected devices, networks, servers, storage, and cloud computing.

Saudi Arabia has recently escalated investment in its education system as it tries to diversify its energy-based economy through a knowledge-based workforce.

"By opening the HP Educational and Science Center, we are providing students with another means to prepare for work, giving them the tools they need to be successful, while increasing their employability," said Mashat.

"We're pleased to partner with HP to add further resources to aid the Kingdom's businesses by providing skilled, work-ready graduates from the first HP Institute in the Kingdom."
