Dell joined the mobile computing age today with a redesigned portfolio of business and consumer PCs designed to take advantage of advances in new operating systems. Built to harness the touch experience delivered by Windows 8, Dell has crafted the XPS 12 convertible and Inspiron 15z.

Dell claims the new offerings bring "unparalleled security and manageability, empowering users to keep pace in an always-connected world".

"The combination of new Dell hardware and Microsoft software will allow customers to create and consume content in new and exciting ways," said Sam Burd, vice president and general manager Personal Computer Product Group.

"We're unveiling a comprehensive refresh of all our consumer and commercial products to take advantage of Windows 8. These stylish new products include clean and intuitive touch experiences, the security and manageability required by IT departments, and features to allow anytime, anywhere access to data and applications."

The XPS 12 joins the many hybrid models available in the market: a laptop that easily becomes a tablet. What is different about the XPS 12 is the mode of conversion between form factors. It features a flip hinge display that is unique to the device, allowing the screen to rotate along a central horizontal axis to face away from the keyboard. Closing the lid then allows the device to function as a tablet.

Despite the design being arguably less straightforward than the Asus Taichi, which offers a second screen already on the lid, online reviewers are full of praise for the XPS 12, which according to Dell provides 90% more pixels than a standard HD display.

Dell is also unveiling the Inspiron 15z Ultrabook just in time for the New Year. The Ultrabook has an optional touchscreen interface and packs loads of features. Measuring less than 1-inch thick, the Inspiron 15z boasts plenty of performance, battery life and responsiveness, along with an aluminium finish designed to appeal to aesthetes.

The XPS 12 convertible is available at prices starting at AED4,999, while the Inspiron 15z will retail at AED2,999 and above.
