Senior executives converge on Dubai for the region's leading telco awards

MEA telcos lauded at CommsMEA Awards More than 200 telecoms executives attended the CommsMEA Awards 2012 at the Westin, Dubai, last night.

Senior telecoms executives from the MEA region’s operators, vendors and regulators converged on Dubai last night for the annual CommsMEA Awards.

UAE operators Etisalat and Du were among the winners, scooping awards for Best Overall Operator and Best Middle East Operator respectively.

At a group level Etisalat also prospered, with two of its opcos gaining awards. Egypt’s Etisalat Misr won the African Operator of the Year Award, while Saudi Arabia’s Mobily, which is part-owned by Etisalat, earned the Outstanding Achievement Award.

Bahrain also triumphed. The country’s telecoms regulator, TRA Bahrain, won the Best Regulator of the Year Award, which was collected by the TRA’s chairman, Dr Mohammed Al Amer. Rashid Abdulla, CEO of Batelco Bahrain, collected the award for Best Business Service.

Other CEOs were also in town for the event. Ahmed Hanandeh, CEO of Zain Jordan, earned the Telecoms Professional of the Year Award, while Ahmed Mekky, CEO of Gulf Bridge International, flew in from Qatar to collect the Telecoms Technology Investment Award.

Mikkel Vinter, CEO of Virgin Mobile MEA, collected the Telecoms Deal of the Year Award.

Middle East Vendor of the Year: Huawei

Regulator of the Year: TRA Bahrain

Best Business Service: Batelco

Most Innovative New Service: Zain Jordan

Best Corporate Social Responsibility Campaign: Wataniya Telecom

Best Marketing Campaign: Nedjma

Telecoms Technology Investment of the Year: GBI

Telecoms Deal of the Year: Virgin Mobile MEA

Customer Service Provider of the Year: Nawras

Outstanding Achievement Award: Mobily

Telecoms Professional of the Year: Ahmed Hanandeh, CEO, Zain Jordan

African Operator of the Year: Etisalat Misr

ME operator of the Year: Du

Converged Service Provider of the Year: Qtel

Overall Operator of the Year: Etisalat
