UAE-based mobile phone retailer, Axiom Telecom, has become the first retailer in the region to sell the iPad mini.

The retailer said that crowds "flocked" to its stores in Dubai on Sunday, just 48 hours after Apple's global launch, to get their hands on the scaled-down version of the tablet, which is pitched at the mid-market and those requiring greater portability.

Axiom Telecom is selling the 16GB WiFi iPad mini for AED 1,799, and is also offering a part exchange service for customers wanting to trade in their old tablets.

"Axiom Telecom is delighted to once again beat the competition by debuting must-have devices in the region," said Faisal Al Bannai, CEO, Axiom Telecom.

Weighing 308g, the iPad mini is 0.28-inch thick and 23% thinner than the regular iPad.

The iPad mini comes with a 7.9-inch screen with 1,024-by-768 pixel resolution and 163-pixels-per-inch density.

Other features include two HD cameras; the front is 1.2 megapixels while the back camera is 5 megapixels - the same as on the fourth-generation iPad.
