Online publisher LINKonLINE, operating under Orascom Telecommunication Holding in the MENA region, announced today the acquisition of www.Arabia.com.

The company said the purchase would allow it to support the portal's Arabic content through "focusing on offering a wealth of exclusive and diverse content - from sport to technology, auto news and entertainment".

Mostafa Kamel, managing director of LINKonLINE, said: "We chose Dubai to be the hub of launching the new look of Arabia.com and a permanent location for our headquarters, based on the strength of the UAE as a business and commercial hub, and Dubai's particular strengths as a media centre."

Kamel cited LINKonLINE's target demographic of 20-49 year-old users, those "who show great interest towards knowing the latest news and updates on sports, entertainment, technology and cars", as a key incentive for the acquisition. He also noted recent surveys that show Internet penetration to have reached 60% in the GCC and 25% in Egypt.

"Since the company was established in 2004, LINKonLINE has been the force behind some of the Arab world's largest and most active portals including Masrawy.com, Yallakora.com, Otlob.com and most recently the launch of  Jawhara.me, which took place in Dubai."
