Want to know what the taxis will look like in Dubai soon? Then head over to the Roads and Transport Authority’s booth at the GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2012. On display is a life-size model of a taxi, along with interesting new developments to ease travel in Dubai.

The new smart taxi on display at the booth has a touch screen behind the two front-row seats for passengers to entertain themselves while taking their taxi ride. These services have been available in cabs in New York City for a while with the screens displaying news, TV sitcoms, weather and provide the option to pay for the ride via credit card. Now Dubai taxis will also have the same services.

RTA has also managed to reduce their complaints in 2011 by implementing the Automated Vehicle Management system for its buses. It has also increased efficiency of the routes by employing GPS technology to better serve buses running through the city. The GPS provides information to drivers about traffic jams so that they can alternate routes and get to their destination on time, says Adel Shaker, director of the transportation system department at RTA.

A new service also lets metro riders charge their nol cards through their mobile phones. This way they can avoid lines at the station as well. The RTA has also launched a mobile service for Android and iOS that provides a variety of services, including mParking, taxi booking, metro/bus station information, fare calculator, Madinati service, and information about tourist places. The app will soon be available for Blackberry and Windows Phone as well.
