The UAE TRA has seized and confiscated 27,600 telecommunication devices that are non-compliant with the set specifications. The devices have been handed over to the Economic Department in Dubai.

Ahmed Al Shamsi, director of Type approval in the TRA said that the regulator is moving forward with its campaigns to reduce the number of unauthorised telecommunication devices. This is achieved by developing the skills of inspectors through training courses and hence controlling the market by effective inspection and education.

The campaigns launched by the TRA in the first half of the year resulted in the seizure of 35,000 sets, which included multiple and different unauthorised devices. Al Shamsi also stressed the seriousness of the spread of such devices in the telco market. He said that the devices could disrupt telecommunication networks and result in frequency interference that could affect subscribers of the network.

The TRA has been spearheading campaigns in coordination with the economic departments of all the Emirates to target gadget sales and take action to stop the spread of unauthorised devices. It hopes to do this by the adoption of standard and international specifications for the registration of local and international manufacturers, licensed operators and companies importing telecommunication devices.
