Juniper Research has released a new report that has found that there is strong growth amongst games and infotainment applications.
This has been attributed to a growing consumer tablet market which will push mobile entertainment revenues to more than $65bn annually by 2016. This is up from $36bn last year. The report also noted that the transition to an app-store centric ecosystem has increased the adoption of casual games, and the revenues for leisure and lifestyle apps are experiencing gargantuan growth.
The report also stated that while entertainment revenues will continue to increase steadily, there are some sectors which will experience a decline. These include the music sector, streaming subscriptions, full-track downloads and ringtones. By 2016 the music sector is expected to be worth 80% of its 2008 value.
Dr Windsor Holden, author of the report observed the increasing contribution made by consumer activity on tablet devices. "For applications such as streamed TV, multiplayer gaming or casino gambling, tablets offer a richer, more immersive experience than smartphones," he said. "This is already translating into markedly higher usage - and consumer spend - on selected apps within these areas."
