Facebook is apparently working to develop its own smartphone, according to a report from the New York Times.

The report cites un-named Facebook employees, along with several engineers who had been approached by recruiters about working on the project.

The company is planning to launch a device next year, and has already hired a number of former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone and iPad.

Facebook neither confirmed or denied that it was developing a phone, but instead referred to a statement it made last year that said: "We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers."

The social networking site has apparently made two previous attempts at developing its own smartphone. TechCrunch reported that it had launched a project in 2010, that was halted after the people involved realized the complexity of the project. Last year Facebook was reported to have entered a partnership with HTC, with this project apparently still under way.
