Channel Middle East finds out from a market personality about their daily routine, their typical work activities and what they get up to during their working day…

Name: Vineet Mehrotra
Company: Emax
Job title: Category Head, IT and Gaming
Years in the role: 2.5 yrs
Years at the company: 6.5 yrs
Previous companies: Mahindras, IDEA Cellular, Eureka Forbes and Orga Kartensysteme GmbH.

How would you summarise your role?

I am heading two areas - IT and gaming, and also handling relationship management with most of the major multinational brands like Apple, Sony Vaio, HP, Dell, Samsung and Lenovo.

What’s the first thing you do when you get in the office each day?

I go through my day planner to make sure I’m prepared for all meetings and conference calls. I try to make sure my calendar is fixed and ready for me the evening before when I leave the office, but I always double check in the morning!

What does a typical day entail for you?

A typical day of a techie begins and ends with gadgets. I get up to a phone alarm and the first thing I check is my phone for any BlackBerry updates or emails. The next thing I do is to check my ‘to do’ list for the day before I fix up meetings. A hurried bath and breakfast later, I am off to the office answering calls on my Bluetooth headset on the way. The whole day passes with the BB in hand, laptop on the desk, talking about the latest gizmos in the market with colleagues.

What skills or qualities do you need to do your job?

I need strong relationship management and networking skills, negotiation skills, commercial or purchase and margin management skills, not to mention inventory management, retail marketing and business orientation knowledge.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love being part of an ever-evolving industry. Meeting people and getting to explore new and innovative ways to manage my business is also something I like and enjoy doing.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

Managing expectations both internally and externally has to be one of the challenging parts of my job. Since we are in such a changing and growing environment achieving these can be difficult.

What criteria do you measure your performance on?

We collectively as a company base the performance measure on bottom-line growth, top-line growth. We also measure our performance against industry benchmarks.

What’s been your most memorable moment in your current role?

Getting a welcome call from the chairman of Emax, welcoming me to Dubai after I moved from within Emax from Oman was memorable to me.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would like to see myself heading a mid-sized growing organisation as chief executive officer.

How much time do you spend out of the office each week?

I spend about 10-12 hours per week, which includes supplier meetings and store visits (Emax plus our competitors).

What do you get up to during your lunch hour?

I always try to have lunch with the team, chatting about things other than business like sports results, either cricket or football.
