Iran threatens Google over missing Gulf name
Iran upset that Google Maps does not label 'Persian Gulf'
The Gulf of Oman is named on Google Maps, but the Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf, does not get a label.
Iran is threatening legal action against Google, for its failure to name the Persian Gulf on Google Maps, Reuters reports.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry is upset that Google does not name the Gulf, which Iran insists should be called the Persian Gulf, in comparison to Arab states who share the waterway and say is should be the Arabian Gulf.
"One of the seditionist acts taken as part of the soft war against the Iranian nation has been Google's shameless act to drop the name 'Persian Gulf' which is ... against historical documents," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was quoted as saying.
"We have put on our agenda to make an official complaint against Google," he said, according to state television.

Persian Empire was defeated and vanished by the hands of the early Muslims and has since converted to Islam, Iran claims itself now as an Islamic state if so why go back to the original Persian name again? This is more evidence of Iran's ambitions to dominate the peoples of the region and its resources too...

Technically they are right. It s the Persian Gulf from a historical standpoint. The first maps to have that were Portuguese, from the XV century. "Arabian Gulf" was an American invention during the 20th century just to flatter those who would later hand over oil and gas concessions in the Arabian Peninsula. It is important to point out that we also have an Arabian Sea, which is right on the other side of the Straight of Hormuz. You can't have both, the Gulf and the Sea next to it, regarless of how you feel about your neighbours!
