Samsung has launched the latest version of its popular smartphone, the Galaxy SIII.

The new handset features a 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED display, a larger screen than previous models and larger than rivals the iPhone 4S and Nokia Lumia 900.

The phone has a range of interactivity functions, including voice, motion and face recognition, for intuitive interaction.

The Galaxy SIII runs on Android 4.0, and has an 8MP rear camera and 1.9MP front camera, with WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC enablement.

Among the interactivity features are Smart Stay, which recognises how the user is using the phone, for example reading an e-book or browsing the web, with the front camera identifying the users eyes; the phone maintains a bright display for continued viewing pleasure; S Voice, that allows voice commands for various functions, and motion detections including Direct Call, which if you are messaging someone but decide to call them instead, you simply lift your phone to your ear and ‘Direct call' will dial their number, and ‘Smart alert,' which vibrates to notify missed statuses when picked up after being idle.

The handset also includes Samsung's improved version of the Android Beam near field communication technology, the S Beam, which allows users to share files just by touching two Galaxy SIII devices together. The phone also has an AllShare Cast function, to connect to a television and show content on the TV screen, AllShare Play to share files between the phone and tablet, PC or television, and AllShare Play Group Cast, to share the screen with multiple devices on the same Wi-Fi network.

The handset, which weighs, 133g, will be available in Pebble Blue and Marble White colours. The phone will launch first in Europe, towards the end of this month.

"With the GALAXY S III, Samsung has maximized the consumer benefits by integrating superior hardware with enhanced smartphone usability," said JK Shin, president and head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung. "Designed to be both effortlessly smart and intuitively simple, the GALAXY S III has been created with our human needs and capabilities in mind. What makes me most proud is that it enables one of the most seamless, natural and human-centric mobile experiences, opening up a new horizon that allows you to live a life extraordinary."
