Network Middle East gets to know Sufian Dweik, regional manager MENA at Brocade Communications.

Can you tell us how you began working in the IT industry in the UAE?
After finishing my studies in the United States I worked there for ten years - first as a software engineer at a small company, then moved to EDS and for the last five years in the United States, I worked at HP.

In 1999 I decided it was time to broaden my horizons and gain international work experience and Dubai seemed like the perfect destination. I was fortunate enough to be transferred to the HP office in Dubai and since then I’ve got my feet stuck in the sand. Dubai is now home to me.

What is the best and worst thing about the IT industry in the UAE?
Best – The UAE is a country with a constant drive to be the best and because of the vision and initiatives of the rulers of the country, world class IT companies have been able to establish a presence here and bring about constant technological progress. The UAE is set to be a regional IT hub with excellent telecommunication and IT infrastructure that compares with the best countries in the world.

Worst – I can’t think of anything that is glaringly bad. Perhaps the only challenge is that the cost of internet access is still relatively high, but I foresee that prices will drop in time to come.

Talk us through your daily routine.
I am an early riser. My day starts at 5am and for the first hour I read and respond to emails. This allows me to get a head-start and set priorities for the day. I then read the newspaper, followed by an hour of quality time with the family. If there are no meetings scheduled, I am in office by 9 am. A typical work day involves internal meetings and calls with the System Engineering director, the channel manager, sales managers, marketing manager and of course responding to emails on various business issues. Perhaps the most important part of my job involves meeting and speaking with CTOs, CxOs and CIOs of other leading technology companies as well as large government and enterprise customers in the region.

What has been your proudest achievement in your career so far?
I joined Brocade with the objective of unifying the team and driving business growth and I must say that it has been a successful journey so far.

What product or innovation should the IT industry watch out for this year?
The world is moving to mobile devices - so much so that more people today own a mobile as compared to a toothbrush.  I believe that mobility enabled smart devices and applications will be BIG this year.

What IT company, other than your own do you admire and why?
Apple.  No technology company has had as much of a global impact as Apple. It has revolutionised a lot of industries including mobile connectivity, print publishing and the music industry and has been an outstanding leader in innovation.

Who do you look up to in your career and why?
Tom Hopkins. He is an authority on the subject of selling who has changed the lives and careers of millions of salespeople . He perpetually exudes positive energy and has an exceptional track record which is quite inspirational.

What do you do for fun?
I enjoy outings to the park with my family and playing sports with my kids. I also enjoy watching a good movie with my wife now and then.

What is one unusual thing about you?
I don’t believe I have any quirks!!  At least that’s what my polite family and friends tell me.
