Samsung has launched its new Samsung Series 7 Slate tablet PC in the UAE. The device features an 11.6-inch HD WXGA display and a screen that is 40% brighter than a notebook screen.

The device runs off the Windows 7 OS and features custom apps built by Samsung.

According to Samsung, the Slate is one of the thinnest and lightest tablets in its class, measuring 12.9mm thick and weighing 860 grammes.

"The Samsung SLATE PC Series 7 takes the laptop a full step towards total mobility - a revolution in portable computing. By combining the power of a PC and the portability of a tablet, the device represents a new era of efficient and powerful mobile computing that will appeal to our Gulf consumers," said Denzil D'souza, Business head of Notebooks at Samsung Gulf Electronics.

Samsung is aiming to target both the B2C and B2B market with this device as it is designed to be able to competently and quickly run multiple tasks at once, including business applications.

With a 4GB DDR3 SSD, the Series 7 Slate is designed to be the fastest tablet PC in the market.

In terms of connectivity, the Slate has a full-sized USB, not usually found on tablet devices, as well as a mini-USB, Bluetooth connectivity and 802.11n wireless capabilities. It is also Intel Wi-Di enabled, allowing the device to push-to-TV, and features a SIM card slot.

For video conferencing, the Slate has a 2MP front camera and 3MP rear camera.

The tablet is designed to have up to seven hours continuous use battery life, 4.2 hours continuous DVD playtime and a 1500 hour charging cycle.

The Series 7 Slate comes with a docking station as well as a digital pen, allowing multiple input formats. It also has a virtual keyboard, and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can also be used with the device.

The Samsung Series 7 Slate is now available at all leading electronics retailers for AED4,999.

Specs look good. I might try one installing Linux if they want to sell it to me without Windows.

I have been using a Samsung Series 7 tablet since December and it is the best work tool I have ever used. It totally replaces my notebook computer, and can run everything from Photoshop CS5 to Visio. The touch screen is excellent and the computer is blazingly fast. Start-up is less than 10 seconds. Highly recommended in spite of the cost. Richard in Abu Dhabi
