Crystal ball gazing
We take a light hearted look at what the business IT landscape could look like on December 31st 2012
1. RIP Windows-only IT departments: 1995-2012:
If we had to say that there was one aspect of the modern IT environment that would be dead and buried by the end of 2012, it would be the ‘Windows-shop’ IT department. The rise of the consumerisation of IT in the workplace saw the concept pushed to death’s door, but the next 12 months will see it well and truly buried.
As more and more companies virtualise, and devices such as Apple’s iPad become more and more commonplace – even sanctioned – the dominance of Window in business will erode. We’ve already seen this trend starting to take shape. Major IT players such as EMC have already provided many of their staff with iPads, while others such as Citrix have elected to let its staff use their own device.
