Security vendor WatchGuard is warning that cyber criminals are targeting Apple’s iOS platform, including the iPhone and iPad devices.

There is a common perception that devices based on iOS are inherently more secure than other mobile platforms, but WatchGuard argues that the popularity of platforms determines how attractive they are to malware writers.

“The density of security threats tends to follow market share,” claims Eric Aarrestad, VP, Marketing, “and if you look at tablets, Apple is clearly the leader in that sub-category.”

Aarestad also disputes any assertion that the rival Android platform is any less secure due to it being open source. “We’ve seen enough evidence that no matter how closed or open something is perceived to be, that if there’s a benefit to attackers in terms of the number of users, then you can pretty much count on threats becoming a reality,” he adds.
The company is spending this year’s GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK promoting its new security suite for devices based on Apple’s iOS software.

During the event, the company announced that it had achieved 20% recent growth in the Middle East, making the region one of WatchGuard’s fastest growing geographical regions over the past three years.
