The latest blog post on Microsoft's ‘Building Windows 8' blog (readable here) shows that Microsoft's forthcoming operating system (OS) will have an application store.

Steven Sinofsky, President of Microsoft's Windows Live Division introduced the core team of engineers who are working on the OS and posted a list of the features and improvements that Windows 8 will bring.

One of the teams introduced was an app store team and while listing improvements and additions to Windows 8, one of the items listed was an ‘App Store'. This is the first time that Microsoft has publically talked about support for an application store in its next OS.

Microsoft is developing Windows 8 to run on personal computers, media center PCs, tablets and even servers. The new interface, which is said to feature full touch support, is designed for 16:9 screens and requires that display screens have a minimum resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels for the full visual experience. Users with lower resolution screens will be forced to use the traditional Windows desktop rather than the enhanced new interface.
