Microsoft will phase out the glossy finish on all new Xbox 360 consoles. It is said that the company will only offer the matte finish consoles as seen on the Xbox 360 4GB model.

Larry Hryb, Head of Programming, Xbox live said that the company is in the process of ‘actively transitioning' to the new finish. Hryb also posted on his blog that contrary to rumours, gamers will not be able to choose between the glossy or matte finishes on Xbox 360 consoles for the holiday season.

The glossy finish has been slammed by some as being prone to scratches, fingerprint marks and smudges. Hryb continued, "We are actively transitioning all our Xbox 360  consoles to a matte finish. The consoles will start to arrive in stores over the coming weeks, so if you really love the idea of a glossy console don't wait much longer."

However there is a glimmer of hope for gamers that like the shiny finish. Even though it may not be available in the plain black finish, Hryb said that the company isn't going to completely eradicate a glossy finish in the future and that it may still be offered on Limited Edition consoles. "Of course, we still may offer a gloss finish on Limited Edition consoles like the upcoming Gears of War 3 console, but if you have your eye on a glossy black console you don't have much time left," said Hryb.
