Storage titan Western Digital (WD) has begun shipping its 1TB (1000GB) 9.5mm thick 2.5-inch mobile hard drives to markets around the world.

The 1TB Scorpio Blue drives have been designed for mainstream notebooks and use two storage platters which boast an areal density of 500GB each.

"With the release of the 1TB WD Scorpio Blue notebook drive in a 9.5mm package, WD is able to offer the greatest storage capacity available for use in portable computing environments," said Khwaja Saifuddin, Western Digital, Senior Director of Sales in the Middle East & Africa for WD.

The Scorpio Blue is optimised for low power consumption and boasts WD's WhisperDrive technology. The company claims the latter helps make the Scorpio Blue one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives on the market today. The drive also features Western Digital's SecurePark and ShockGuard technology, which helps improve long term reliability and protects the drive's platters and other mechanical parts from damaging shocks.

1TB WD Scorpio Blue drives retail for US $139 and are covered by a three-year limited warranty.
