Mobily revenues up 27% in first half of 2011

The operator attributes its rise in revenues to uptake of data usage.

Mobily revenues up 27% in first half of 2011 Saudi-based Mobily's data revenues show an increase of 46% during the first half of 2011

Saudi Arabian mobile operator Mobily stated that its revenues for the first half of 2011 ending June 30 increased by 27% to reach SAR9,611 ($2,563) million, compared to SAR7,554 ($2.014) million for the same period last year. The operator's data revenues showed an increase of 46% during the same period.

The operator, which is partly owned by UAE telco Etisalat, attributes its increase in revenues to higher minutes of usage, data transmission and increase in smartphone sales. Data revenues reached 20% of the total revenues during the first half of 2011 as compared to 17% revenues for the same period last year.

Abdulaziz Saleh Alsaghyir, chairman of the board said that the number of broadband users had exceeded 5 million, and that Mobily has an estimated 75% share of the mobile broadband subscriptions in Saudi Arabia.

The operator's net income during the second quarter of this year amounted to SAR1,164 ($310) million, as compared to SAR901 ($240) million for the same period last year, showing a growth of 29%, and a growth of 17% over the first quarter of this year that touched SAR998 ($266) million.
