Channel Middle East finds out from a market personality about their daily routine, their typical work activities and what they get up to during their working day...

Name: Afi Hashim
Company: Optimus Technology & Telecommunications
Job title: Sales Manager
Years in the role: Less than 1 year
Years at the company: Less than 1 year
Previous companies: Westcon Middle East, Pinnacle Computer Systems

How would you summarise your role?

My primary role in Optimus is sales and business development. My job involves reaching out to channel partners, building customer relationships, working closely with partners to enable their projects in the region and offering our channel partners support on sales, pre-sales, solution designing and post-sales. As a value added distributor, we work closely with our channel partners as an extension of their team to reach out to the end customer.

What’s the first thing you do when you get in the office each day?

First thing in the morning, I catch up on local channel and technology news to keep myself updated on the current technology trends. I then check my emails and prioritise urgent requests from clients and partners for immediate action. I also have a short team meeting or call to discuss the plan for the day.

What qualities do you need to do your job?

Having good communication skills and knowledge on technology and the ICT market is imperative for my job. Strong follow-up with partners for the order updates, respond to partners and customers immediately on their requests and communicate with partners and meet their expectations from the beginning. I have to also be approachable and available at any time to partners to support and resolve their issues, along with co-ordinating internally and responding to the partners on any pre-sales, logistics and credit related issues.

What does a typical day entail for you?

No day is typical. However, on most days, I coordinate with the pre-sales and order processing team to set up the priorities for the day, attend new partner meetings to increase the channel breadth and offer them our value added services, meet with existing partners to do a business review on current projects and make calls to reach out to new partners.

What is the hardest part of your job?

Payment follow-up and credit related issues are the most challenging part of my job. However, we do have internally a strong team available to help us to ensure smooth sales transaction. As part of the follow up, we go as a team to coordinate with our customer on payments and take the initiative to talk to different levels of contacts from our customer companies.

What criteria do you measure your performance on?

I am responsible for the targets and the revenue that has been budgeted. My primary role is revenue generation, tracking the business monthly base and ensuring the business is in line with assigned targets. I measure my performance on sales, channel recruitment, customer service and profits generated for my company.

What’s been your most memorable moment in your current role?

I was very proud and happy when Optimus won the ‘Best VAD’ award from two different industry magazines.  My most memorable moment was the dinner party with the entire team, where we sang, danced and celebrated our win together as a family.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself in a senior role in my company as the best value driven sales executive and to do my best to achieve the common goal.

How much time do you spend out of the office each week?

I spend most time with customers and partners outside the office. I also travel extensively to other territories as well.

What do you get up to during your lunch hour?

On most days, I meet customers or partners for lunch. However, I do take a little time out to pray. I always look forward to Thursday lunches as we try to go out together as a team.
