Men’s Campus team secured the points for configuring firewall for security policies

Sharjah University wins Juniper competition Sharjay University's Men's Campus has won the first Undergraduate Intercollegiate Cyber Defence Competition at Zayed University hosted by Juniper Networks and the College of Information Technology.

Sharjah University - Men's Campus was announced as the winner of the first Undergraduate Intercollegiate Cyber Defence Competition at Zayed University hosted by Juniper Networks and the College of Information Technology during the 3rd Undergraduate Research Conference.

The Sharjah University - Men's Campus secured the most points in the competition for configuring the firewall for security policies and integrating an effective Intrusion Prevention System. The American University of Sharjah received second prize and Zayed University Abu Dhabi Campus took third place.

The competition was designed to give students hands-on experience of managing and securing an enterprise network..

"As part of enhancing the students' educational experience and maintaining their academic agenda, we aim to provide a practical environment where networking students simulate real world scenarios," said Dr Leon Jololian, dean of the college of information technology, Zayed University. "The practical examples motivate students, and drive the competition which they will experience once they enter the Information Technology business." 

Each team in the competition was given identically configured PC systems and had access to Juniper Network's learning portal, the Fast Track Programme, and study materials on the Junos operating system and security gateway.

Workshops were organised by Juniper and Spectrum prior to the event to familiarise competitors with Juniper systems.

Students from several of the UAE's leading universities took part in the competition, including Manipal University, Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University and Dubai Men's College-Higher Colleges of Technology.

"Congratulations to Sharjah University on its well-deserved award amongst such strong competition," said Dr Samer Shaar, enterprise regional managing director, Middle East and Africa, Juniper Networks. "We applaud Zayed University for its initiative to encourage and enable skill development for future IT engineers, maintaining enterprise security in the Middle East. The competition focused on basic network architecture and security topics including Junos fundamentals, users interface guide, security zones, policies, intrusion prevention system and troubleshooting, in order to provide students with practical knowledge of a secure, cost-effective solution for Middle East enterprises."
