Samsung launches Galaxy SII in GCC Young Soo Kim, president of Samsung Gulf Electronics says that Samsung hopes to become the number one brand in the UAE.

Samsung has launched its new Galaxy SII across the GCC region. The phone runs on Android Gingerbread 2.3, features a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and is retailing for $708 in all major electronics stores.

The Samsung Galaxy II is designed to allow multimedia and document download speeds of up to 21mbps using 4G technology and HSPA+. Samsung says these download speeds are three times faster than those of smartphones using HSPA; a MP3 file takes less than three seconds to download onto the Galaxy SII.

It also it has the new Wi-Fi Direct function, which allows the phone to act as a wireless router, connecting to other smartphones, Wi-Fi enabled PCs directly, without any access points or wireless routers.

The Galaxy SII has a super AMOLED plus screen and 4.3-inch screen size with a high contrast ratio.

It is the slimmest and lightest Samsung smartphone yet, measuring 8.4mm think and weighing 116g.

Access to the Samsung Apps store gives the smartphone the ability to download thousands of apps. The phone also features several native apps, these include; Samsung Social Hub, which brings together all of a users social networks under one umbrella, and Samsung Readers Hub, designed to give users access to thousands of e-books, newspapers and magazines.

Samsung says that it will shortly be releasing the Samsung Music Hub, designed to correlate a users favourite music.

The phone can be switched onto silent during a meeting simply by turning it face-down.

The phone also features a 1,650 mAh battery, designed to give nine hours talk time and 620 hours of standby time.

It features enhanced voice solutions, designed to allow users to dictate text messages, make voice calls and launch e-books.

The Galaxy SII has an 8MP camera at the back, with a four times digital zoom and a 2MP camera at the front and can record in full 1080p HD.

"With the Galaxy SII, we are confident Samsung mobile will become the number one mobile phone player in the UAE. As you may know Samsung is the number one player in USA, in Europe recently we became number one player in the smartphone category and the mobile phone category...  Analysts in the world are as optimistic as we are, according to the latest information, Japanese security consultants announced that Samsung smartphones will become the number one smartphone player by Q2 2011, predictions say that Samsung will be the number one brand for 2011 and 2012," said Young Soo Kim, president of Samsung Gulf.

Its market share in the UAE is currently 19%, lower than its Europe market share, which is 29.7% according to Ashraf Fawakherji, general manager, Telecommunications Group, Samsung Gulf Electronics.

Samsung plans to increase its current UAE smartphone market share by increasing product launches, which will include the 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch Samsung tablet devices.
