BenQ says its MX880UST provides ‘Disruption-free learning for small to medium-sized classrooms'.
The projector offers short throw projection capabilities and so offers benefits in terms of allowing you to place the projector closer to the projection surface (thus saving space). As a result the projector's lamp won't blind the presenter, while he's making his presentation either. (Standard projectors have to be placed further away from the projection surface, so the projection beam would distract or blind the presenter.)
The MX880UST is designed to be ceiling mounted exclusively, though you can still use it from a desk and use your GPU's drivers to flip the feed, so it's the right way round.
Throwing a variety of content at the BenQ reveals that it packs a decent DLP projection engine. Compared to other short throw projectors we've evaluated recently, the MX880UST manages to produce noticeably sharper text.
The BenQ also manages bright, clear visuals even when there's plenty of ambient light in the room. This is no surprise given the projector's 2,500 ANSI Lumens rating. Photos and video also look great with well-defined colours and thanks to a contrast ratio of 3,000:1, there's ample detail even in dark scenes. While a solid projector the BenQ's cooling system is noisy and thus distracting.
Verdict: The MX880UST packs a sorted short throw engine and won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
