Activision Blizzard has announced that it will launch the next instalment in the Call of Duty game series sometime this year.

The new game will also be supported by a new online gaming service, which will include new features and free and paid for content.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard commented in an earnings call that: "This year's Call of Duty initiatives will result in the best Call of Duty experiences we have created to date. You will see a lot of new services and capabilities that will be provided free of charge to all of our customers."

The online service, codenamed Project Beachhead, has been in development by a dedicated group within the company for the past two years.

The last edition in the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops has topped best selling lists since it was launched at the end of the last year, with 5.6 million units selling in the US and UK in the first day of release, setting a world record.

While Activision Blizzard did not reveal any more details on the game, other sources report that it will go on sale in November, and will be a continuation of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series.
