MTC Touch demos HSPA+ services
Operator expects commercial launch by this year end
Lebanese mobile operator MTC Touch, which is managed by Zain Group, conducted a live demo of HSPA+ technology for mobile services in the country. Referred to as 3.9G HSPA+ by MTC Touch, the new technology is expected to be commercially available in Lebanon by the end of the year and is to offer speeds up to 42 Mbps.
Nabeel Bin Salamah, CEO of Zain Group, said: "Hi-speed reliable internet access has become a necessity in today's fast developing world, and advanced technologies such as 3.9G HSPA+ will contribute positively to Lebanon's economic and social well-being on various levels."
Out of the 850 sites that are to be HSPA+ compliant, MTC Touch plans to have 50 of these sites enhanced with LTE technology.
Dr Charbel Nahas, Lebanon's minister of telecommunications, said: "With the impending launch of such technology, Lebanon will be ahead or on par with other countries in the region, and this will stimulate economic activity and attract investment into the country."
Chinese telecom vendor Huawei is implementing the HSPA+ technology for MTC Touch network, on behalf of the Lebanon's ministry of telecommunications.
Earlier, in March, MTC Touch and another mobile operator in Lebanon, Alfa announced their plans to upgrade their respective networks to 3G/HSPA+ technology across the country. Setting the pace for its operations in Lebanon, last year in June, Huawei carried out the Middle East LTE road show in the country with live LTE and mobile broadband demonstrations in a dedicated articulated vehicle. The two week road show was held under the patronage of Charbel Nahhas, Lebanon's minister of telecommunications.
