Display complete specs ›The OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus comes from HP's business range and at almost US $400 is one of the most expensive inkjet MFD we've tested.
The HP includes a high-resolution inkjet print engine consisting of six separate ink tanks, so rather than replace an entire cartridge when just one colour runs out, you can replace just the cartridge that's empty. The printer is specified as having a top print resolution of 1,200 x 1,200 dpi and when we studied photo prints the HP produced, we were amazed with the results.
The printer is a speed demon too. Feeding it our 20-page monochrome and colour documents the HP finished the print jobs in 93- and 103-seconds, which works out to 12.3ppm and 11.6ppm. These are the fastest inkjet figures in this grouptest. What's even more impressive is the fact that the laser-based Samsung CLX-3185FW was just slightly faster in the monochrome test with its figure of 14ppm. Feeding the HP our six page text and graphics document the Officejet impressed once again, it managed a figure of 5.2ppm, meaning it was faster than its inkjet competitors as well as the Samsung CLX-3185FW.
The only issue we had with the HP has to do with its ridiculously long setup process. When we plugged it in and powered it on for the first time it took a monumental 15-minutes to complete its various tests before becoming usable.
Verdict: While the HP is a pricey proposition you’re essentially getting an inkjet that performs as fast, if not faster, than entry-level colour lasers.
