Display complete specs ›The workgroup-aimed Canon i-SENSYS MF4570dn is a monochrome MFD only.
The Canon still packs plenty of functionality however. It boasts scan, copy and fax capabilities and because of its positioning as a solution for small workgroups, it also packs a built-in automatic duplexer, a 35-page automatic document feeder and network connectivity. The latter is useful because it allows multiple computers to connect to the printer without needing a dedicated print server.
To tackle workgroup print loads the Canon is also fitted with 64MB of memory as standard, while its standard paper tray can handle 250-sheets at a time (larger paper trays boost productivity as paper refills are less common).
The Canon sports a clean and compact design and is indeed the slimmest and lightest laser model in this grouptest. The MF4570dn is in fact 300g lighter than the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus inkjet-based MFD (also reviewed on ITP.net).
Putting the i-SENSYS through its paces it proved a rocket. Canon claims a print speed of 25ppm so when the printer stormed through our print test managing a figure of 22.2ppm we were very impressed. The MF4570dn's monochrome figure is the highest in this grouptest and edges out the much more expensive OKI MC361dn by a small but present margin of 1.2ppm.
Verdict: Though the Canon lacks colour capabilities it’s an absolute rocket with a decent set of workgroup features for a fair price.
