CommVault has released the latest version of its Simpana software, which it says will help companies to protect data stored on laptops and remote desktop PCs.

Version 9 of the Simpana security solution includes enhancements to ensure that data residing on corporate PCs is better protected, archived and indexed, to ensure corporate data is properly retained and stored for compliance and governance purposes.

The company points to research from Enterprise Strategy Group, Inc which found that less than half of organizations that have data protection processes for endpoint devices back up their desktop PCs, and only 38% back up laptops.

Simpana version 9 uses third generation data de-duplication technology to eliminate redundant backup and archive data before sending it over the network, resulting in up to 90% less data transfer, to reduce backup windows and bandwidth constraints.

Jeff Echols, senior director of product marketing, cloud strategy & alliances for CommVault commented: "CommVault has extended its comprehensive data protection for servers and applications to encompass greater support for desktops and laptops, all of which can be protected easily as part of our holistic approach. In doing so, we've unified the management of data from endpoint to archive and eDiscovery while taking advantage of our single platform, intelligent software and source-side de-duplication to yield compelling cost and operational benefits."
