The Qtel Group has been providing communications and logistics to countries facing natural disasters and political turmoil over the last few weeks.

The company has so far provided reduced call rates and unlimited free SMS to Egypt, Japan and Libya. The unlimited SMS has proved helpful, allowing family members to contact one-another when voice calls were disrupted, according to Qtel.

Tunisiana, part of the Qtel group has distributed over 500 prepaid SIM cards and call vouchers to refugees at the Ras Jedir camp in Southern Tunisia, which currently houses more than 17,000 refugees from Bangladesh, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan and Mali.

The company has also sent food, drinks, healthcare items and blankets to the refugees. Working with the Tunisian Red Crescent, Tunisiana has also supported buses to bring Tunisian national refugees home during the crisis.

In Algeria, Qtel Group company Nedjma is working with the Algerian Red Crescent to provide communications for those caught up in the Libyan crisis. Libya shares a border with Algeria.
